Change Detectors Category Description
Introduction
The primary function of a Change Detector is to note when the content of
a Web page has been changed (since last checked) and inform the user that
a change has occurred, and (usually) what the change was. Most change detection
tools are actually designed for current awareness purposes. They vary in
their sophistication. Some merely report that a change of some kind has
occurred. Others provide a detailed summary of the nature of the changes.
Change Detectors for VRC
The presence or absence of change, and its nature, can theoretically be
significant indicators of the health of a Web site. Lack of change (particularly
if the content would be expected to change, or if accompanied by other signs
of deterioration) could indicate neglect or abandonment. Great change over
a short period might indicate either a complete site reorganization, new
content emphasis, a change in the management or ownership of the site, malicious
damage, etc. Change Detectors have the greatest utility in the VRC Strategy
and Dectection stages.
Change Detector Features
Change detection is relatively low tech and low impact, but could potentially
be very revealing. However, experimentation would be needed to properly
interpret the results (i.e. when and what kind of change or lack of change
is significant?)
